Christmas traditions at Mittersill
Christmas traditions at the Hotel Schlosss Mittersill
A Christmas stay at Schloss Mittersill is all about the traditions and customs of the Pinzgau region. Find out more here!
Tradition and customs are very important in the Pinzgau. Our grandparents and parents practiced these customs and passed them on to us—this is how traditions are preserved. These customs gives us support, encourage us and make us stand out. Just as nature changes in its own special way in every season, customs are also diverse. Pinzgau customs are all about protecting and preserving values.

Tradition at Schloss Mittersill
We welcome our guests with a friendly “Grüss Gott.” The women at reception may rave about the surroundings in their local dialect, tell you about skiing on their day off and give you some insider tips... This is exactly what the typical Pinzgau cordiality and tradition is all about. Especially around Christmas time, you’ll find all sorts of beautiful customs to warm your heart and soul. “Räuchern” (incense burning) is a typical tradition in the province of Salzburg. This ritual takes place during the three to twelve Raunächten between 21 December (St. Thomas Night) and 5 January (Epiphany), and is intended to cleanse the home and protect the people living within it.
Perhaps you have also heard of the custom of the “Anklöckler?” In many places these choristers go from house to house before Christmas, singing Christmas carols and wishing good luck and blessings for the coming year. They also come to our castle as part of the Schlossadvent celebration. If you’ve been here before, you’ll agree: This celebration in the Christmas-decorated castle courtyard, featuring orchestral brass players and regional folk musicians alongside culinary delicacies, is a particularly atmospheric evening surrounded by customs from the Pinzgau.

The scent of Christmas
The scent of incense and candlelight fills the lovingly decorated castle parlors. The smell of freshly baked cookies and Christmas delicacies wafts seductively from the castle kitchen. Traditionally, we also bake Christmas cookies and conjure up regional Christmas delicacies. As a true Pinzgauer and a chef at Schloss Mittersill, it gives me great pleasure to be able to practice culinary traditions and customs. Regionality is very important to me; we attach great importance to fresh, local produce. True to our motto “We not only live in one of the most beautiful and diverse regions of the Alps, but also in an exclusive delicatessen that is incomparable,” we prepare all dishes freshly from regional and seasonal produce.
