Driving the panoramic Grossglockner road

Gentle inclines lead toward the summit, turn by turn. The Grossglockner is perfectly suited for classic cars due to its moderate, easy route that suits older engines. There’s no need to hurry on the 48 km route from Fusch-Ferleiten to Heiligenblut (or the other way around, the road can be driven both ways). If you have a bit more time at hand, we recommend a round tour of about 3.5 hours from Mittersill to Lienz, Mörtschaft, and Heiligenblut, where you get to drive the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.

A stopover at the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Höhe, the highest point of the panoramic road, always pays off. There’s the large visitor center with numerous exhibitions, viewing platforms, and many other attractions. You’ll even find a few hiking trails along the extended classic car tour.

Classic car contests

The high alpine road has always been a popular meeting place for fans of classic cars. Every other year, there’s the Grossglockner Grand Prix across 12 km, through 15 turns and 92 bends. It’s not about being as fast as possible; the winner is whoever manages the authentic original route from the 1930s the smoothest. The true winners, however, are the car fans, as there are legendary models from illustrious brands to see on the Grand Prix days, such as Porsche, Austin, Bentley, Jaguar, and Lotus. Vintage tractors are also welcome on the Grossglockner. The annual tractor meet, including the world championship, hosts more than 500 machines full of character.
